The American Civil War was fought at a time in history that some have described as “the end of the medical Middle Ages.” Two-thirds of the men died from disease in that war, not from their wounds. An understanding of germ theory was still a decade away. History buff and Civil war reenactor John Potera takes a look at the practice of medicine in the Civil War.
