The pantry (photo right) stored the owner’s china and cutlery.  A newspaper article written some years ago boasted the shelves of the Octagon’s pantry would hold 1,000 pieces of china alone!

The Drawing Room

The Drawing room features a coal burning fireplace with a black-glass mantel to resemble black marble.  The portrait over the mantel is of Charles B. Rich himself and is believed to be a self-portrait.  When you visit the Octagon House you will notice that the eyes of the portrait follow you wherever you go.

The Dining Room

The white marble fireplace in the Dining Room is all original except for one small piece.  This fireplace, like the one in the Drawing room, is coal-burning.  Note the chair in the center background – it is designed to allow for the wide, hoop skirts worn by the affluent women of the day.

The dumbwaiter beside the fireplace runs down to the basement level kitchen.  Next to it is the speaking tube to allow communication between the home’s owners and their servants at mealtime.
