March - The Rich-Twinn Octagon House
at 145 Main St. Akron, resumes its tours: the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every  month from 1:00pm—3:00pm or by appointment, 542-2254.  Watch for details regarding events at the Octagon House throughout the year. Christmas ‘08 will be a special time at the Octagon House!

March 13  – "The Settlement of Western New York" Why did people choose to settle here? What did Akron and Newstead have to offer? Holland Land Company Director, Patrick Weissend, will share his research and information on when why and how Western New York was settled!

Sunday, April 6th   marks the grand opening of the Knight-Sutton Museum’s 2008 exhibit - “A History of Businesses.” The museum is located at 123 Main St. Akron. Hours are: the first Sunday of every month from 1:00pm-3:00pm; Wednesdays from 10:00am-1:00pm; or any time by appointment 542-7022 or 542-2994.
 


April 10th,
"Bars and Taverns of Akron/Newstead " will feature NHS’s own Doug Farrell and friends sharing stories, photos and details of the bars and taverns that ‘used to be.’ It is sure to be a meeting that will include some humorous anecdotes and marvelous memories as well as a few tall tales!

Next, NHS member Tony Kutter of Kutter Cheese will discuss the family cheese business with details regarding his work in Russia on
May 8th with a program we’ve titled Kutter Cheese and the Russian Connection!”   Tony’s visits to Russia have been consistent over the years and have allowed him to build relationships as he works with his global counterparts.

Sunday, June 8, Chairpersons Sue Brown and Sue Sweitzer will be ready for another spectacular and much anticipated Akron in Bloom."  It’s a tour of some of the most beautiful gardens in our area. Each year features many different gardens so whether you have never taken the tour or you have done so for years, it always promises a fresh new look.  This year, we have moved the date to early June so participants can enjoy the view of some of the lovely spring flowers that bring color to the garden.  Tickets will be available at the Bag and Barrel, 99 Main St. and Bedford’s Greenhouse, 6820 Cedar St. in Akron. The tour starts at the Rich-Twinn Octagon House, 145 Main Street, Akron and is a ‘rain or shine’ event. For more information, please call Sue Brown at 542-9377 or Sue Sweitzer at 542-9384.

June 12  “Fossils Galore!”   What’s paleontology? The folks from the Rochester Academy of Sciences know! It’s an evening to view some of their collection; discover the ages of the fossils; where they are found; and gain some insights during a brief geological history of WNY.
